Yes, Virginia, There Are Good Samaritans | December 28, 2011

Yes, Virginia, There Are Good Samaritans

Letter to the Editor

Amidst daily news of crime and corruption there also exist humbling acts of human goodness that too often go unreported. These invisible threads of hope interwoven throughout our community offer some of the best unexpected gifts we’ll ever receive.

A few months ago my husband dropped his wallet in a restaurant parking lot and didn’t realize he’d lost it until hours later. We drove back to the establishment to search for it but it was gone. The manager said he’d call us if anyone reported finding it, but we knew that was unlikely by then. When we got … Read More »

Breckenridge’s “Race of the Santas” | November 10, 2011

Breckenridge’s “Race of the Santas”

Looking for something new to try for this Christmas? Want to get a break from the same old tradition?

This winter season, Breckenridge Ski Resort celebrates its 50th anniversary. First opened to the public on Dec. 16, 1961, Breckenridge was the first ski resort in North America to install a high-speed quad (1981) and the first Colorado resort to allow snowboarding (1984). This Christmas holiday, Breckenridge, Colorado is introducing a new event for holiday travelers called “Race of the Santas”.

Combined with Winter Dew Tour, a holiday lighting ceremony (pictured above) and an amateur snow sculpting contest (pictured below), Race of the … Read More »

Oh Tannenbaum | December 24, 2010

Oh Tannenbaum

Searching for our Christmas tree was the perfect opportunity for my daughter and me to spend some time together without computers and phones.  It was cold, but not too cold.  The sun was out and we were on a mission.  It wasn’t hard to find a tree we both agreed on, but more importantly it was nice to be able to laugh and enjoy the day together.

Grandma’s Scotch Fudgies | December 21, 2010

Grandma’s Scotch Fudgies

By Sue Keels

No one who bakes – bakes alone

No one who cooks – cooks alone

Even when you are baking or cooking by yourself, a cook in the kitchen is surrounded by generations of cooks past, vintage advice and precious family recipes passed from one generation to the next.

Years of love, laughter and memories every time you stir, simmer and sift!

I have such fond memories of my grandmother’s baking. As young girls my sister Karyn and I would enjoy snowy visits to New York on Christmas Day to spend time with my grandmother. The sweet smell of “scotch fudgie” … Read More »

History of Christmas In America | December 10, 2010

History of Christmas In America

For over 4,000 years people around the world have been observing Christmas with traditions in secular and religious practices in nature. Many of Americas Christmas traditions were celebrated centuries before the Christ child was born. The giving of gifts, holiday feasts, the Yule log, carnivals, singers going from house to house and church processions can all be traced back to the early Mesopotamians.

The pilgrims, who came to America in 1620, did not celebrate Christmas. Actually from 1659-1681 the celebrations of Christmas was outlawed in Boston. And anyone found celebrating the Christmas spirit was fined five shillings. But in … Read More »

So This is Christmas | December 7, 2010

So This is Christmas

So this is Christmas
And what have you done

Hopefully, we’ve started the holiday season on the right foot.  We’ve avoided chaotic crowds and the unfortunate snarkiness that has become so trendy this time of year.

Another year over
And a new one just begun

Time definitely flies, particularly as we get older.  Let’s remember to cherish every day.  Let’s bless all those who cross our paths.  Let’s remember that a kind word and a smile go an awfully long way.

And so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun

Because fun is truly what it’s all about, I believe.  Life is far too short to not … Read More »
