TGIF: Chic Grocery Trips | April 20, 2012

TGIF: Chic Grocery Trips

Of course weekends are all about fun, but they can also be about catching up and running those errands that are all but forgotten during the week. My number one weekend errand is normally the dreaded grocery shopping trip. I always hate hitting the grocery store and everything about it: the buggies won’t turn properly, there are people bumping into you, and worst of all, the lines are tremendously long.

It might sound a little ridiculous but I always try to look and feel my best when I go. That way, I’m not in the most horrible mood. When I feel … Read More »

30-Minute Meals: Ciopino | January 17, 2011

30-Minute Meals: Ciopino

by Vicky DeRosa

Ciopino is thought to have originated in San Francisco.  It is believed that Italian immigrants from Genoa began making the stew from the catch of the day in the bay area.  Ciopino is a seafood based stew made with, tomatoes, wine and fresh herbs.  There are no set rules for the type of seafood to be used.

We enjoy Ciopino on Christmas Eve served over linguine.  My family likes it spicy so I add a little extra crushed red pepper to give it heat.  It seems to me that leftover Ciopino is … Read More »

Wines for the Top 10 Tough-To-Buy-For People on Your Holiday List | December 13, 2010

Wines for the Top 10 Tough-To-Buy-For People on Your Holiday List

Pairing wines with personalities for gift shoppers—there’s an app for that (and a web site)

“Wine is one of the few presents that makes both the giver and the receiver look good,” says Natalie MacLean, the red-nosed e-sommelier behind www.nataliemaclean.com, one of the largest wine web sites. “You look like you spent a bundle on the gift (even if you didn’t) and the recipients are happy that you think they know something about wine (even if they don’t).”

This holiday season, anyone can tap into MacLean’s expertise via her free web site and mobile apps for … Read More »

Wine Cheese Bread | January 14, 2010

Wine Cheese Bread

How about a little cheese with your wine? Bread that is.  I wanted something special to go with dinner so that’s what I baked today – Wine Cheese Bread and it was FABU! While it is a yeast bread, the end result is almost closer to a quick bread in texture.  This was an easy bread to make with few ingredients, like most bread.

You’ll want to combine the first four ingredients in a saucepan.  Cook over low heat until very warm. I usually gauge this by when the butter is just about all melted but you can measure that around … Read More »

Canada and Wine- A Perfect Winter Combo! | January 7, 2010

Canada and Wine- A Perfect Winter Combo!

The Niagara Wine Country in upstate New York and Canada has a lot of great wineries. In the town of Niagara-On-The-Lake, Canada alone- there are over 20 wineries. One of the best wines they produce in that region is Ice Wine- a sweet, syrupy delicious wine that’s best alone, with cheese or dessert. While most people think of checking out wineries when it’s sunny and warm outside, this is the time of year when Ice wine grapes are at their finest.

Winter can feel like forever, so a short weekend getaway is a great way to break up my least favorite … Read More »

A White and Red Wine Christmas After the Tornado | December 6, 2009

A White and Red Wine Christmas After the Tornado

A White and Red Wine Christmas After the Tornado

By Mick Harrison

My wife is from Parkersburg, Iowa.  That’s where they had the F5 tornado in May of 2008 that destroyed half the town and the only grocery store.  We travel to Parkersburg to celebrate Christmas every year and there is much wine consumed during the week we are there. There is no liquor store in Parkersburg and the only place that sold wine was, you guessed it, the grocery store that no longer existed.  By November of last year I was in a panic.  We could travel … Read More »

My Passion For Wine | December 1, 2009

My Passion For Wine

My Passion For Wine

An Average American Entrepreneur’s Wine Manifesto

By Mick Harrison

I was brought up in the small Midwestern town of Coffeyville, Kansas.  It is an interesting town that really has nothing to do with the dark inky beverage of the same name.  My parents rarely drank wine.  They preferred drinks like whisky sour, Tom Collins and liquors you mix with soft drinks.  I never really enjoyed these.  If I want my drink to taste like cola, I’ll just have a cola.  I like beer okay, but it has never quenched my thirst.  I could … Read More »
