Pooch Patriotism Means Celebrate Smart With Your Inquisitive Canine | July 1, 2011

Pooch Patriotism Means Celebrate Smart With Your Inquisitive Canine

Dear Inquisitive Dog Guardians,

It’s that time of year again where Americans enjoy celebrating their country’s independence with BBQs, alcohol and explosives. As an American-born pooch, I enjoy many of the customs that are part of this festive holiday like spending time with friends and family, and being surrounded by all the delicious food. But as an inquisitive canine, I must ask, “Why the explosives?” I know this observance goes back to John Adams describing the “illuminations” in the sky to celebrate Independence Day but fireworks can be quite frightening not to mention dangerous (especially the do-it-yourself backyard variety).

In honor of … Read More »

The Love of a Pet: Bongo Found Me! | February 22, 2011

The Love of a Pet: Bongo Found Me!

After having to put down “Tank,” the love of my life, a Brittany Spaniel, I swore I was never going to own another dog.  I love them too much.  As the saying goes, “Never say never. A couple summers ago, my daughter was going to sleep-away camp for a week and at our farewell family dinner the night before I teased her, “Don’t be surprised if we have a little puppy when you come home!”  Her eyes lit up, but I told her I was kidding.  My “fib” turned out to be a premonition.

While my daughter was away, one morning I … Read More »

Rescued Pups Help Disabled and Austistic Children | February 15, 2011

Rescued Pups Help Disabled and Austistic Children

By Ilene Fine

It’s a typical Tuesday morning in our house and Brandy and Val know the routine.  I don’t know how exactly they know when it’s Tuesday, but they do, and as I go about putting the carrots and blueberries in their plastic containers, they’re hopping beside me in anticipation.  They know they’re going to see the kids. They know they’re going to work soon.  Brandy and Val, former down-on-their luck rescue pups, are now pampered pooches helping disabled and autistic children as pet therapy dogs.

Brandy and Val have checkered pasts who … Read More »

Sometimes You Just Have to Step Up and Pass It Forward | February 14, 2011

Sometimes You Just Have to Step Up and Pass It Forward

by Wendy Nan Rees

Every now and again we are blessed by the presence of something greater than we are and we’re then reminded that this world is so much bigger than just our four walls. I met Governor on a Saturday morning in Santa Fe, New Mexico through my mother-in-law at the time. She had a sense that my first dog, Webster, was going to pass away and she did not want me to be without a dog. It was her belief that I needed a dog no matter what, so she took me to meet my first litter of … Read More »

3 & 5 YEAR OLD LABS SAVE THE DAY AND ME | January 26, 2011

3 & 5 YEAR OLD LABS SAVE THE DAY AND ME

By Myrna Lou Goldbaum

In December 2010 I had a total knee replacement surgery and came home on oxygen; the walker and tubing were both a nuisance. A week later I decided to vacuum the house. I finished several rooms when I felt faint; suddenly everything went gray. Sandi, the 3 year old Yellow Lab turned off the vacuum cleaner with her paw. Sunny, our 5 year old rescue Yellow Lab stood and pressed against the walker, Sandi on the other side. Like Lassie saving her master, they marched me straight down the hall into … Read More »

NO Means YES! Dog’s Lupus Gone! | January 11, 2011

NO Means YES! Dog’s Lupus Gone!

By Carol Giambri

Imagine bringing your furry pet in to the vet for a drippy eye when in fact you didn’t have a vet to call your own? I have always been into natural healing. For each clinic we went to for the Lupus story below I always explained my position first: no drugs, alternatives only.

In September 2009, the first clinic that addressed her eye, I walked out hearing a bad tooth and the possibility of Lupus. I remember those words rolling around in my head: “your dog may have Lupus.” I have owned dogs for over 40 years, … Read More »

My Aversion to the House Pet | June 14, 2010

My Aversion to the House Pet

I am afraid to tell people this.  In fact, to many of my esteemed friends and colleagues I have yet to.  Until now, that is.

I am not an animal person. In fact, I preface visits to people’s houses with the question: “Any pets?”

The few people I have confided this too stare at me with a mix of exasperation and confusion. Essentially, the look people give me when I tell them that I am not much of an animal gal is that of being a blackheart.  I do not want to harm the little bastards, as cute as they are; I … Read More »
