Exclusive Interview with Celebrity Hair Stylist and Makeup Artist Kerrie Urban

Kerrie Urban is a celebrity hair stylist and makeup artist who also works for Michael Dueñas‘ Hair Room Service. She began her career over a decade ago and has worked on Lady Gaga, Lindsey Lohan, Mariah Carey, Zach Galifianakis, and others. Her work can be seen in magazines including Elle, Marie Claire, Instyle, Glamour, and Shape. She is very passionate for her career and loves what she does. I recently was able to ask her a few questions about her job, tips she may have, and the brands she uses.

What are your favorite products and brands that you use?

For hair I love Bumble and Bumble Tonic and their Thickening Spray as well as Osis Dust it and Elastic Hairspray. For makeup, on my clients I use Makeup Forever HD foundation and HD cream blush and Dior for shadows and lips.

How did you get started as a makeup/hair artist and how long have you been in the business?

I’ve been in the business for about 12 years now. I grew up always drawing, painting, designing my own clothes and experimenting with my hair so it was only natural to purse hair and makeup as a career. I got my training at the Aveda Institute in NYC and from there worked at salons and got involved with fashion week. I started freelancing as a fluke when a friend asked if I wanted to help her out on a shoot, and six months later quit my salon job and started shooting full time.

Do you have any makeup or hair advice on how to maintain or bring out your beauty for our readers?

More important than anything, take care of your skin. Never go to bed with makeup on, don’t forget to exfoliate at least three times a week and always use a quality moisturizer (I love La Mer- yes its pricey, but it’s worth every penny!)

For hair, the less you wash your hair the better! You can rinse with water, but reduce using shampoo as much as possible and you’ll have amazing naturally shiny hair.

There are many “how to” videos hitting the web revealing trade secrets and techniques. Do you like this phenomenon or do you not like all the secrets being revealed?

Most of the videos on You Tube are of non-professionals teaching hair and makeup “tricks”. I would avoid those, but as long as the video is a legitimate artist teaching you, for example, how to apply false eye lashes, by all means take advantage of the free advice!

What do you enjoy most about doing hair and/or makeup?

I love making people feel confident and beautiful.

What are your weaknesses and strengths when it comes to styling?

I’m horrible at doing the ’80s Kelly Kapowski bangs.
