Tales from the Yoga Studio | March 16, 2011

Tales from the Yoga Studio

The yoga studio is where daily cares are set aside, mats are unfurled, and physical exertion leads to well-being, renewal, and friendship.

In Los Angeles, yoga teachers have become celebrities and designer tank tops can cost a small fortune.  Still, many students flock to the relatively unglamorous Edendale Yoga in the hip, out-of-the-way Silver Lake neighborhood.  It’s here where Lee uses her extraordinary teaching skills and unusual empathy to help students gain control of their bodies and possibly their lives as well.

Katherine, the studio’s resident masseuse, is trying hard not to sabotage what could be the perfect relationship. Graciela, is … Read More »

Honouring Honesty | November 22, 2010

Honouring Honesty

I am planning a wedding.

In June of next year, I will be acting as the Maid of Honour for one of the most fantastic women I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Christie and I have known each other for close to eight years; about the same time she has been dating her polar opposite fiancé. I remember the day Christie and I met; we worked at the same restaurant. She blazed through the doors of said eatery declaring her intentions of partying that night.

“Who is down to go out and drown some drinks?!”

Her then platinum locks … Read More »

My Aversion to the House Pet | June 14, 2010

My Aversion to the House Pet

I am afraid to tell people this.  In fact, to many of my esteemed friends and colleagues I have yet to.  Until now, that is.

I am not an animal person. In fact, I preface visits to people’s houses with the question: “Any pets?”

The few people I have confided this too stare at me with a mix of exasperation and confusion. Essentially, the look people give me when I tell them that I am not much of an animal gal is that of being a blackheart.  I do not want to harm the little bastards, as cute as they are; I … Read More »

BETRAYAL | September 9, 2009

BETRAYAL

Have you ever been betrayed? Have you ever had the feeling? It knocks the breath out of you hard; you feel pain in your heart. It makes one feel like a fool.

JUSTICE v. COMPASSION | August 20, 2009

JUSTICE v. COMPASSION

Until that time, I will put the existence of Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi out of my mind. I will cherish the sounds of my children’s laughter, and tuck them away in my memory with the sounds of laughter my dear friend made.

More Than Social | February 16, 2009

More Than Social

A few months ago I received an e-mail through work from a friend I had not seen since high school. She told me that she was trying to rally everyone in our class to get on Facebook so we could all be in touch and have great attendance at our next reunion.

My first thought was, “No way.” First of all, I said to myself, it seems highly narcissistic, and beyond that, geared for participants in their teens and twenties, not ones in their, ahem, forties. But she was persistent, and finally I “gave in,” vowing not to ever communicate with … Read More »

Vacation Helped Toss Toxic Relationships | February 12, 2009

Vacation Helped Toss Toxic Relationships

What I love about vacation is the return.  The feeling of rest.  How problems at home are not as big, and seen with a new perspective.  What I love best is the re-set of priorities.

I just got back a week in Mexico.  A glorious week.  Sunshine, surf, and amazing food.
I think a lot when I’m on vacation.  There is something about being away from your normal environment where you can re-evaluate things.

I was re-evaluating friendships.

I’m really sociable.  I know a lot of people. Famous and not so famous. I enjoy hanging out and spending time with my friends.  Lately, though, … Read More »

CELEBRATE YOUR JOURNEY | February 6, 2009

CELEBRATE YOUR JOURNEY

My Girlfriend passed this article along to me… had to share.

READ THIS VERY SLOWLY… IT’S PRETTY PROFOUND.

Too many people put off something that brings them joy just because they haven’t thought about it, don’t have it on their schedule, didn’t know it was coming or are too rigid to depart from their routine.

I got to thinking one day about all those women on the Titanic who passed up dessert at dinner that fateful night in an effort to cut back From then on, I’ve tried to be a little more flexible.

How many women out there will eat at home because … Read More »
