C’mon, admit it. Decorate schmecorate, it is THE focal point of the room. This fact leaves us spending wads of cash making the television look good in our respective rooms.

At my store, “housing” the television and its components is always a hot topic. My favorite customers to help with this are couples, because nothing else typifies the gender wars in decorating more. It usually goes one of two ways: 1) the husband has bought a television roughly the size of a Smart Car which is sitting out in the middle of the room and the wife is on a desperate mission to find a cabinet big enough for it, or 2) the husband has scouted out his choice of media but has somehow been restrained by his wife from purchasing it until the appropriate cabinet is found – which actually gives her a say in the eventual tv purchase based on cabinet choices (smart girl).

The name of my store is Armoires & More, and while we started out with that focus, now we offer a to z in furnishings. A couple of years ago, when plasmas and flatscreens starting becoming commonplace, smarty-pants people would say things to me like, “Guess no one is buying armoires anymore so you’ll have to think of a new name.” In reality, there will always be customers who prefer for their media not to be open to the room, and in recent months I have noticed a uptick in sales of cabinets that enclose the tv. For us, part of that is the number of options we are able to give people in cabinets that are now not as deep and are more stylish than their predecessors.

As far as decorating, having the tv open in the room can be the trickier proposition. And although I’ve seen some tasteful examples, I don’t love a television over the mantle.

To me, the tvs make these rooms so stark, and take away from the other elements in the room.

The tv-in-the-fireplace was featured on the Apartment Therapy website, and it received a bevy of favorable comments. (I give it a thumbs down, but I never claimed to be cutting edge.)

This certainly seems like overkill, especially given how lovely the room is.

In these rooms, the feel is so much warmer simply because the tvs are recessed, and they do not take away from the flow.

Many room simply do not lend themselves to hiding the television, and in some instances add to the décor of the room.

In my house, I put one television in an open bookcase in my more casual media room. The sitting room, while a little more formal, still needed a tv, but it isn’t the primary purpose of the room so I wanted to hide it.

I like having options.

" width="264" height="300" />Oh, iPhone, how did we ever live without you? You have quickly become the house manager, reference tool, camera, music library and in our world, pocket decorator.

The days of lugging around digital cameras for ideas and inspiration in design seem to be a thing of the past. Our customers are using their phones to pull their decorating projects together. Often they have taken pictures of their spaces to remind them what the particulars are of what they need when they are shopping. They use these to get our advice on decorating, as well as snap pics on their own to decide what might or might not work once they get home (or to get the blessing of a significant other!). Nor do they need to write prices or dimensions – they just take a picture of the tag with the size and $$!

Decorators and designers take it to the next level by e-mailing pictures to clients, or like Susie, one of our designers, using her phone as her decorating portolio – pictures and information from current projects to stay on track as well as past projects for inspiration (and to show immediately to potential new clients).

The ever-growing world of apps offers no shortage of possibilities to assist you in your design projects. Some, of course, are helpful, while there are duds, too. These are a few of my favs:

ben® Color Capture

Take a picture of any color (on any thing) that inspires you and instantly find a match, suggestions offered, to one of more than 3,300 colors from Benjamin Moore’s collection. Touch “strip” for 6 similar colors, or “Harmony” for 4 complementary colors.

(One touch locates the nearest Benjamin Moore retailer, too.) Free.

Home Sizer

Calculate the square footage of rooms on the spot by entering the dimensions. For comprehensive space planning, add dimensions of additional rooms to estimate not only gross but usable square footage. Handy for a remodel or for decorating a new home. A function also estimates cost per square foot of a room or house, as well as offering a mortgage calculator. $2.99

Paint Swatches

Aquariform Designs’ app allows you to create a page for your project and choose from thousands of paint colors for 6 manufacturers. In your visual workspace, drag chips around on your screen to compare and contrast what colors work together. Keep notes by project, and e-mail to all parties involved. $1.99

Evernote

I love this one. Although not necessarily a design app, Evernote allows you to take pictures of any idea and store them in your own personal database. You can then access it from any computer or device you use, organized to your specs, tailored to your projects.

Color Change

Jonesing to paint a room but scared to take the plunge? Take a picture of your room, then “paint” it using this app. Select the area – floors, ceiling, trim – and the color blending tool preserves the shadows and highlights of your original image. Save to your photo album, or shake to undo. $2.99

Yard Sale Mapper

See all the yard sales within a 20 mile radius, any Thursday-Sunday. Tap to see full ad, then use the map to get you there!

(For really hard-core shoppers, E-bay and Craig’sList are also available on the iPhone!)

Happy designing!

When I first read about the show, probably 15 years ago, I was the buyer and merchandiser for a then-unique group of home furnishings stores focused mainly on decorating second homes – ranches, lodges, mountain homes, lake houses, and farm cottages. I can still remember my heart beating fast at the photos and descriptions of the offerings, from flea market fair to fine antiques: signs, folk art, light fixtures, architectural pieces, crafts, glass, toys, and more.

When I first began going to the show, we bought for multiple stores and took big trucks and several people, so we rented a place called Phil’s Farm. The Phil’s, as it was called, was owned by two former University of Texas fraternity brothers (both named Phil) and their families. (It was at The Phil’s when I first discovered the joy of an outdoor shower – nirvana in the heat of a Texas summer!) It was one of the many idyllic farmhouses scattered across the countryside, and driving through the area I often pull over to take in the details one picturesque spread after another.

After I struck out in a business of my own, I stumbled through a series of B&B’s (Bed and Breakfast) until I found the place I now stay each show, the Oldenburg Sunday Haus. The story goes that in the 19th century people traveled long distances to neighboring towns to attend church on Sunday, which was usually not a trip they were able to make in a day, so friends and neighbors would offer their “Sunday Haus” – the modern day equivalent of a guest house. (Although in Texas we refer to ours as a “backhouse.”) B&B’s run the gamut of set-ups, from a house with bedrooms that you rent with community bathrooms to a group of individual cottages. The Oldenburg Sunday Haus has bedrooms with private bathrooms as well as a Sunday Haus in the back. Their common link is that they provide breakfast with your lodging. Many have gotten creative with their offerings, from antique houses brought in and reassembled, to Airstreams with landscaped “patios.”

The drive is about 3.5 hours for me, but people come from all over the country. My routine is to head down on Wednesday to Warrenton, which is the first part of the show to open, although dealers continue to open through the weekend. So I spend Thursday and Friday wandering in and out of tents and halls up and down that stretch of Highway 237. There are a couple of shows also opening during that time that require driving, so I make sure to hit those, too. The event itself has become so popular that prices have become almost too expensive for me to buy for the store, but I love the experience and the inspiration and ideas I get while I’m there. This most recent show was really heavy on what I call “industrial chic” – lots of zinc-topped tables (antique as well as newly-made-to-look-old) and metal furniture and decor; every gold starburst mirror I saw had a “sold” tag on it and has become the staple in the past few years – all things French remain hot hot, whether fine antique or French shabby.

It’s always fun to see friends who not only shop, but the dealers who have become friends over the years. Each show a group of us makes plans for dinner at Royer’s Round Top Cafe, which is known far and wide for its pies. You wait outside, sitting on benches or hay bails, until your name is called. There are two giant antique coolers on the porch filled with wine and beer, and you serve yourself, reporting your drinks on the honor system to one of the Royer offspring that now run the cafe. Bud Royer, the patriarch and founder, greets people by name, clad in his mainstay turquoise bracelets, rings and necklaces. The show began, and in many ways still is, with a heavy emphasis on Texana and western, which remains the heart of my heart, even though I don’t focus on that any more. It’s common to see dealers and shoppers clad in attire they wouldn’t wear anywhere else – cowboy boots with skirts & dresses, cowboy hats, concho belts. I love the excuse to put on a pair of vintage cowboy boots and roll up my jeans so they can be fully appreciated.

My least favorite aspect is that out in the cow pastures, there are not restrooms. And even in the buildings where restrooms exist, they simply weren’t made to accommodate the demand. So Port-A-Potties are a common sight. I can think of a long list of things I’d rather do than have to make that choice, so I try to be a regular at Third Base, whose restroom is for paying customers only. I buy a LOT a iced teas.

It’s a given that the weather will be one of two things no matter what the season of the show: blazing hot or rainy and stormy. This show was the latter. Nearby San Antonio had 59 straight days of 100* temperatures in July and August and the whole of south Texas was under a 2 year drought. But when it started raining, it didn’t quit (still hasn’t). So I gathered my rain gear and prepared for it. Wellies were the standard footwear, because even the days without rain left fields of mud through which we all slogged in search of the next discovery.

But really, then why are we being left, adrift, with no decorating inspiration??? First, it was my BELOVED Cottage Living, shut, as my dad says.

I HEART this magazine. It was so RELATABLE (if that’s a word). Great ideas that translated to the way we LIVE every day in an environment we’d like to be satisfying (as opposed to how we’d live if we were rock stars or at best completely unencumbered by a budget of any kind.) But, I said to myself, CL was only in publication for 4 years; hardly enough time to find traction in the fickle rag decor world.

Then, before I could catch my breath, the cessation of publication of a decorating LEGEND – Country Home.
In the past couple of years, CH lost it’s founding editor, the talented Carol Sheehan, in addition to heavyweight creative director Mary Emmerling. But the rub was that under the new editor the magazine was taking on a sort of gravitas in the last issues, redefining itself to make a play for a serious new readership. I was heartbroken.

Next, insult added to injury, the demise of the wonderfully quirky darling of the design world, Domino. I wondered how I would spend my time. (Seriously.)

And now, this. Shuttered.
How will we know? What will we do? *Sigh*

But I can report with all sorts of happiness about some very talented women, their inspiring and inspired design blogs:

Houstonian Joni Webb’s Cote de Texas – truly charming author who does her research and it shows. Ronda Carman’s All The Best, Decorno: If Decor Is Your Porn This Is Your Blog (*note* if you didn’t catch on, this one is not to be shared with your little ones, but still fun & interesting). Grace Bonney’s Design*Sponge blog covers so much creativity! Love it.

I race home every day to see what the mail gods have left me that I might delight over (or toss aside scornfully, as the case may be) that evening. I’m just old-fashioned enough to love the ritual of sitting down with a magazine after supper, turning the pages with my fingers, ripping out the pages with the ideas I want to remember and maybe incorporate in my one-day dream home. But short of that experience, you’ll love the ideas these ladies offer, and better yet, appreciate getting to know them through their “publications.”

All I know for sure, as Oprah would say, is that THIS is not an option.

I’d bet money that the guy that came up with this concept is a hunter desperate to get his wife to sign off on all the weekends (translation: $$$) he’s off on hunting trips. (Although I confess I did enjoy the recent article on Ted Turner’s cute, environmentally motivated son. Okay, yes, I’ve thumbed through a couple of issues while getting a pedicure. But I DON’T subscribe. Yet.)

A couple of years ago I clipped a feature on a house from Elle Décor that had ebonized floors – meaning black, laquered floors. I absolutely loved it. The house wasn’t necessarily cold or modern, as you might expect from the description. It was just appealing. Somewhere I lost that clipping, but the idea stuck with me.

In my design work – and in my own home – I sometimes find traditional hardwood floors difficult to work around in terms of decorating. On one hand, the richness and simplicity of pretty wood flooring is a winner. But without going the white slipcover route, it is often hard to incorporate a balance of color and texture in a casual, traditional look without it feeling heavy.

I clipped this home from the pages of the now (sadly) defunct Cottage Living last fall. Everything about it speaks to me. Initially what caught my eye were the doors and window sashes accented with black. That takes a boring, blah room and gives it immediate personality and gravitas. And it eliminates the expectation for “window treatments,” which can feel so affected & even stuffy sometimes.

The new furniture has a more modern twist, but the black floors and doors and windows add character to the room, as well as warmth. And the black also pulls in the family antiques the homeowner wanted to incorporate while allowing her to express some of her own decorating sensibilities.

The sisal rug keeps the feel clean but give great texture and contrast to the black. These are all the ideal elements to incorporate in a room for balance.

A dark wood floor like ebony, or the reverse – a very light brown – shows off the furniture more and makes the room more stylish.

In this Jonathan Adler house for maternity designer Liz Lange, the more contemporary furniture and colors are softened by the black accents he uses on doors and windows.

Visualize this kitchen and entry with white doors, and the entire feeling changes from clean and warm to cold and stark, despite the splashes of color in the furniture.

These two houses, very different in style, clearly show how black accents can be used in a various incarnations to bring in warmth.

Ebonzining wood floors is akin to re-doing any hardwoods – stripping them free of all polyurethane and re-staining and sealing them if they are already stained. If you’re going to be putting them down for the first time, you might want to check your buildings insurance policy to see if you need to alert your provider first. An easier switch would be painting door and window sashes. I’m keeping these pics in my idea file for my own house!
