Exclusive Interview With The Whimsical Mondo Guerra

Whimsical is the one word Mondo Guerra, finale contestant on Lifetime’s Project Runway would describe his style. His life seems to fall under the same definition.

Growing up he didn’t always dream of becoming a designer. He played the piano for many years, some days playing for over 5 hours. He dreamed of scoring music for films. He appears to always have had creative vibes running through him. Around 19 years old he started his path in fashion.

After a stint in New York, he was brought back to his hometownof Denver, Colorado due to a broken hip. After recovery, he found a job in a play house working with designers who had over 30 years experience. While working there, they saw his talent and felt he should try out for a show they all watched called Project Runway.

Mondo auditioned for Project Runway, but was cut. This left him in despair and struggling with his HIV which he had not yet openly announced to his family. Back in the hospital with pneumonia, he was at his lowest point. He realized he was not going to let this disease rule his life. He wanted to make a change. He decided then to go after his passion and live his dream. From this revelation, Guerra made his way on Project Runway. He said that being critiqued by Tim Gunn was a surreal experience. “Tim Gunn…how amazing to have someone of that caliber making you pursue your creative dreams.” Project Runway taught him about himself, working with other designers and believing in what’s in your gut.

He never thought he would be on national TV revealing he was living with HIV. The show’s recognition lead him to be apart of the Living Positive By Design campaign. A platform to express life living with HIV and to teach others about the stigmas and how to cope. When asked thoughts or words of advice he lives by, Mondo said ” believe and visualize because it does come true”.
Mondo Style Tip: He describes his 2 favorite color combos black and white, which always looks sophisticated. Tthen add a pop of color with your shoes or accessories.

Mondo Guerra from last season’s “Project Runway” is leading the national HIV education campaign Living Positive By Design alongside fellow show alum Jack Mackenroth. Mondo has been HIV-positive for ten years, and since his courageous disclosure of his HIV-positive status on “Project Runway,” has become an advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness. Living Positive By Design, supported by Merck, encourages people living with the disease to maintain a positive outlook on life while working with their doctors to manage their disease. The campaign underscores the importance for people with HIV to talk with their doctors about treatment goals, including achieving an undetectable viral load and increasing CD4 cell counts, as well as side effects from medications that may make staying on therapy more difficult.

Through the campaign, Mondo hopes to combat the stigma associated with the disease and share his experience with HIV. He’s also encouraging people living with HIV to work with their doctor to find a treatment regimen that is right for them, and discuss overall health and any health concerns when talking with doctors about HIV treatment options, such as managing cholesterol levels.
