PinExt The Devil Is in the Details: Desiguals Coat Collection and Giveaway!

Even the most dedicated fashionista owns one standard coat that she can throw on when she’s in a hurry, a coat that goes with everything and holds up in all weathers. It’s the lord of the jackets. It’s the one that I’ve begun looking for as Seattle wakes up to more and more chilly mornings, and it’ll determine how we feel walking out the door for most every day of the season. Moral of the story: make this coat good.

When I visited Desigual’s website to get inspired for the coat search, the Spanish brand’s name, which means “unequal,” got its message across loud and clear: all coats are not created equal. Even a tiny variation in how the buttons are spaced or placed can make all the difference, especially when you’re wearing it all the time and with every outfit. Desigual’s coat collection has persuaded me to keep three details top of mind:

1.  Greatcoats and cocoon coats are all the rage this fall, but the bulkier your coat, the brighter (or lighter) the color should be. This blush-colored piece from Jil Sander is a perfect example. Large swaths of black can be a stark statement, but keep those black coats as slender and form-fitting as possible!

2.  Scout for military collars. Designers this fall seem to be addicted to them–not only do they keep your neck warm, but they’re a great complement for this season’s hairstyles and they make it even easier to wear your the coat over anything. Military collars come in various dimensions, so when you go coat hunting, wear your hair like you plan to wear it most often this fall and you’ll find the collar of your dreams!

3.  When you’re looking at printed coats, imagine wrapping yourself up in a big blanket. Features such as large prints and fluffy fringe are the reason so many jacket designs this fall are called “blanket coats,” so when it comes to printed jackets, bolder and heavier motifs are better! Desigual’s bold prints are one of its claims to fame, so I’ll be keeping their collection on the radar.
