As a mom of two kids under age five, Bola Ajumobi often has to deal with fibbing. Thankfully kids’ fibbing has not gotten sophisticated enough for parents not to know when they tell those “little white lies”. Children’s books addressing these kinds of issues help reinforce the desired behavior of being truthful.
The children’s book, “A Big Fat Enormous Lie” By Marjorie Weinman Sharmat and illustrated by David McPhail, first published in 1978 is just as relevant today as it was thirty years ago.
It is the story of a boy who lied to his parents when asked who ate the “cookie”. You could feel the immerse burden he felt as a result of the lie he told. That lie grew on as a big bad monster that accompanied every everywhere he went, much like an albatross round his neck. Finally he got tired of this “Big Fat Enormous Lie” and confessed eating the cookie to his parents and the Big Fat Enormous Lie disappeared!
“A Big Fat Enormous Lie” is ideal for kids between ages three and seven. It makes for a good read aloud book for kids ages three to six and simple enough to be read independently by a second grader.
