In the global trade battle, you cast a vote every time you open your wallet. The decision: Whether you spend your money on products made in America or overseas. “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” is launching a new series, “Made in America,” focusing on American manufacturing and our economy. The facts show that our nation is addicted to imports. In 1960, foreign goods made up just 8 percent of Americans’ purchases. Today, nearly 60 percent of everything we buy is made overseas.
“World News” will be taking the “Made in America” challenge to Dallas, Texas as the “World News” team works with a Dallas family to furnish three rooms of their home exclusively with products that are made in America. Is it possible? On the broadcast and online, “World News” will tackle the key questions: Is buying American-made more expensive? What staples are no longer manufactured in the U.S. at all? And what difference would it make if everyone promised to buy more American-made product? “World News” weekend anchor David Muir and ABC’s Sharyn Alfonsi answer these questions as they take viewers room-by-room, illustrating the opportunities and challenges for Americans looking to buy goods manufactured in this country.
In addition, the broadcast will feature several American manufacturers that are making products 100% made and assembled in this country. There’s no question that manufacturing still has a major impact on our economy and on the nation’s workforce. The United States has fewer manufacturing jobs now than we did in 1941, the same year as the attack on Pearl Harbor, but if every American spent an extra $3.33 on U.S.-made goods, it would create almost 10,000 new jobs in this country.

Made in America is a great idea. It is hard to buy American when you are living on a farmers salary these days in the troubled state on NJ. I could use a suggestion.

I went to walmart shopping yesterday–the store that used to advertise “Made in America”. I bought two Playtex bras, Ray-0-Vac batteries, WalMart brand thigh high hosiery and a golf shoe brush. Didn’t think of where it wad made until I arrived home, immediately looked and the batteries -Made in USA, the WalMart hosiery–Made in America–the shoe brush–made in China, but the one that blew me away was Playtex-made in Thailand. I always thought Playtex was a good old American product. Thank you for your series. I will try to be more careful !!!
