For over eight years, Peggy Li has been creating designer handmade jewelry that has caught the attention of TV’s Private Practice, Grey’s Anatomy, Without a Trace, Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, and publications such as Oprah Magazine and Lucky. Her pieces are elegant, yet confident and worn by many well known celebs.
Your company took off when the costume designer for “Buffy, The Vampire Slayer” requested pieces for the show back in 2001. Do you recall the piece you were wearing and what was going through your mind at the time?
I was wearing a floating crystal necklace (stretchy crystal bracelets were the rage at that time!). I was very very surprised, as I had sent in samples to the show months before I got the call. I was just thrilled to be a tiny part of a TV show that I really loved!
Your designs are for the self-assured, adventurous and style-savvy woman. Would you say this is fair representation of yourself as well?
Absolutely! I think I have a strong sense of self and sense of style, and I hope that is conveyed through my designs. I try to go through life with a curious mind, but it’s hard to keep the every day worries and tasks from filling the brain! Luckily, fabulous fashion can be a great escape.
Where do you get your inspiration for your designs?
I love the beauty of natural materials like gemstones. It sounds cheesy, but the stones themselves “speak” to me and let me know how they should be used! I love working with texture, color and shapes to create designs that are harmonious with the wearer.
Why do you think the Simple Dot and Pearl Slice Necklace is one of your most popular styles?
These two designs have strong clean lines to them, which means they don’t need a lot of flash to have impact. They are easy for someone to wear and mix with different outfits, yet the pieces do stand out on their own.
I love your Turquoise Chunk Necklace as well as your other turquoise pieces. Do you feel this stone is not solely restricted to spring/summer?
I respond to the color and don’t really follow seasons with my designs. Turquoise goes great with summer whites but it also pops against the rich jewel tones of fall and holiday — it’s really a year ’round stone.
What is your favorite piece from your Holiday 2010 collection?
I think the fringed Herkimer Necklace and Rocker Chic Earrings are my favorite. They are delicate but luxe with edge, sparkly but totally wearable.
