Nicole Bridger was born and raised in Vancouver, BC. She obtained her BAA in fashion design from Ryerson University in Toronto ON. She then went to London, UK to intern at Vivienne Westwood where she learned the art of sculpting fabric and returned with an understanding of doing more than just making clothes. Bridger came back to Vancouver looking to learn some of the business side of things and paired up with the owner of Lululemon Athletica to co-create Oqoqo, a casual eco clothing line. She was then ready to put her design and business sides together to create her own label of socially conscious contemporary women’s wear, Nicole Bridger.
What is the philosophy behind Nicole Bridger Designs?
It is to do what is good, what is right for the earth, its people and their spirit. For the earth we use all sustainable fabrics, for the people we use ethical production and for spirit we put “I am love” labels into every piece of clothing which helps spread positive energy.
Your dresses have a very relaxed feel to them. Is this how you would you describe your average customer?
Yes, it’s that west coast feel.
Did you always want to be a fashion designer?
I was obsessed with Barbies as a kid and began sewing my own clothes in grade 7. I didn’t realize I could do what I love and make a career out of it until I was 16.
You have had the opportunity to study aboard while interning with Vivienne Westwood. What did you learn most from this experience?
3 things mainly. That is it possible to stay who you are and succeed in this industry. That I can use fashion design as a vehicle for the changes I want to see in the world. And, of course, the art of sculpting fabric.
What is the fashion scene like in Canada and how does it compare to New York City?
It’s quite different in each city but overall quite conservative and casual. New York’s fashion scene is much more exciting and vibrant. But I do think that Canada is changing and we just had Vancouver’s first Eco Fashion Week and it was a huge success.
What is next for NB?
I’m looking to open our first boutique in Vancouver. I’m looking into showing our next season either in New York or London and just keep going, one step at a time.
