I always think of prom dresses being an American thing – you know all the High School graduates getting dolled up for their school leaving party – but it’s actually something that’s caught on in the UK too.
Prom dresses have become even more popular over the last few years and have made their way onto the high street as going out dresses, wedding dresses as well as for our school ‘proms’ and university balls.
A prom dress is essentially just a posh ballgown to Brits and can take many shapes and forms. The most traditional of which is the 50’s style dress with a tutu style net skirt, but it can be anything from a cocktail dress to a floor length evening gown.
50’s style dresses have made a comeback over the past couple of years with some brilliant, and not so brilliant, high street interpretations of this modern look. You’ll no doubt remember seeing those women’s dresses and skirts with net underskirts? Think of Olivia Newton John in Grease and you’ll get the general idea.
Of course prom dresses aren’t just for the evening anymore, oh no. Lily Allen kicked off a major trend with her prom dress and trainers combination and black tutu dresses and skirts have become favourites to team with converse style trainers and heavy eyeliner for an edgier look.
Prom style wedding dresses have popped up everywhere too. The full tutu skirt is perfect for adapting for a wedding dress and it looks gorgeous in a longer skirt – very fairytale-esque and is great for summer brides who are looking for a shorter style to show off their legs and some fabulous shoes.
Some looks just never go out of fashion and I think the prom dress is definitely a modern classic which can be dressed up for a special occasion or dressed down for a funky daytime look. Check out the hottest prom dresses now available at Very.co.uk and find your perfect dress!
