Dropping temperatures, winds that make you wonder why you did your hair in the first place, and dry air – all signs that winter is on its way, and so is less than gorgeous skin if you let it. But don’t fret! There is a way to get through the winter feeling just as sexy as you did in the summer. It is just a matter of kicking your low-maintenance routine up a few notches.
Many of us suffer from dry skin. You can be sure that once the leaves start to fall from the trees, your skin will turn from naturally dewy to dried out and flaky almost overnight. I myself am a sufferer of dry, cracked winter skin and have found a few easy, and inexpensive, ways to make my skin glow again.
To avoid dry or cracked hands, apply a thick layer of lotion to them right before going to bed and cover them with cotton gloves. These can be found your local pharmacy or even a dollar store. The lotion will soak in overnight, leaving your hands soft and smooth.
If you’re already giving up on those skirts and dresses you love for fear of someone seeing your dry and flaky legs, don’t! Simply exfoliate during your shower (using a loofah will do the trick) and apply lotion when you get out of the shower and are still wet. This allows more lotion to be absorbed and it will keep your skin moisturized longer. Any lotion with Shea or Cocoa butter is your best bet. These lotions are thicker and absorb more than most.
Hint: If you notice your man kissing your forehead rather than your cracked lips, it’s time for lip chap! There are different types for different symptoms. If your lips are chapped or flaking, you will be better off with an ointment that has petrolatum. It will get right down into the cracks. If your lips are just dried out, but not cracked, go for a waxy balm that will keep them hydrated.
Dry, itching scalps can lead to dandruff-like flakes on your favorite black cardigan. To get rid of these embarrassing looking specks, there are a few solutions. A mild dandruff shampoo is a great gentle way to ease your dry skin. Oatmeal, olive oil, and vinegar are also great home remedies.
Winter weather can wreak havoc on your skin. So boost your everyday routine into high gear, and not only will you feel great, but your skin will thank you.
