Rich and whimsical: the look for Fall '09

Along with daylight savings time comes a different look in makeup.  Colors get richer.  Textures become denser, and the light frivolous look that was ubiquitous in the summer is replaced by a heavier, more serious color palette.

On the other hand the recent financial crunch has caused everyone to rethink our lives, and that includes the way we apply makeup this fall.  Instead of focusing on all dark colors, there are sheers for the cheeks with little to no shimmer, medium colored lip stains that add color yet isn’t too densely colored (but highly glossed), and a smoky eye in a beautiful amethyst color.

Versatility is the key to the Fall/winter ’09 color palette.  You shouldn’t stick to just one family of color.  It’s okay to take a plum colored pencil on the eye, and mix it with a slate gray shadow, then use an apricot blush, and top off the look with a rosy lip.  It may sound mis-matched, but when done minimally, the look is fresh and new, and will brighten up the face, without looking too summery.

This color combination (as viewed above) creates a juxtaposition that challenges the traditional fall palette:  by combining light hints of color on the cheeks, a smoky eye, and a medium toned lip, you will look hip and modern, yet sophisticated and classic, all at once.

This look was created to work on anyone, and is totally adjustable.  By adding more drama to the eyes with the Peacock eyeliner, you are creating a more dramatic night-time look suitable for the holiday party.  By easing up on the pencil, and using the matte black eyeshadow as a liner, you create a soft, wearable “daytime smoky” look.

Try this look, and you’ll be surprised how easy it is, and how versatile it can be.
